Untitled (Location: Broadway at Vernon Blvd.)
1999 image size- 10x28ft, structure size- H 25ft W 28ft D 8ft digital photo print on vinyl, metal, wood, concrete
This piece was installed at the entrance of Socrates Sculpture Park - at the head of Broadway where it meets both Vernon Blvd. and 11th Ave (a five sided intersection) with the East River behind it at a time when the land was threatened by real estate development. The image is taken from the POV of the sign itself, a mirror view looking back up Broadway. It was a gesture aimed at thwarting the waterfront view with a 'commercial' sign/structure much in the same way a condominium development would. The structure still stands as a site for other artist billboard projects.
